About Us

Jakkals Asem is a small game farm located in a secluded, tranquil bushveld setting in the Malaria free Dinokeng area.
The farm got its name from the calling jackals that can be heard most evenings. Translated from Afrikaans, “Jakkals Asem” literally means “the jackal’s breath”. If you are lucky enough you will encounter jackal on the farm in the evenings. While sitting around the fire, you can hear the Nightjar calling and spot the bushbabies at the same time! If you think that you may have heard a lion, you are right! It is so quiet you can hear the lions from Mystic Monkeys and the Dinokeng Game Reserve.
Many other wild animals can be seen on the farm, including various tortoise species, scrub hares, warthog, kudu, duiker, and other small antelope. Jakkals Asem is a birders paradise with many species inhabiting the area. Fish Eagles have been spotted on the farm and you can hear their call during the mating season. Nesting sites for Crested Barbet, Woodland Kingfisher, and Hadeda Ibis have been identified within meters of the Lapa!
As this farm is located just outside of the Dinokeng Reserve, the Big 5 are not found on the property, making it safe to walk or cycle on the farm. It also provides guests with an opportunity to drive through the Reserve for a short game drive. Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lions and Cheetah have been spotted on the main road on the way to the farm. Keep your eyes peeled!
Guests can be accommodated in the Bush Camp or Campsites. The Bush Camp accommodation is rustic, yet tastefully furnished.
The Bush Camp has two units, a “Rondavel” with an ensuite outside bathroom and a “Squaredavel” with a communal bathroom. Each unit can accommodate four guests in a Queen size bed and two single bunk beds.
The Bush Camp also has four permanent tents. Each tent can accommodate two guests. The Fish Eagle and Kingfisher tents are close by to one another (each with two single beds), perfect for parents to have their young children close by. The Nightjar tent is named after a nocturnal bird which can be heard all year around and is furnished with a Queen bed. The Woodpecker tent is positioned in a secluded area of the camp (two single beds). The permanent tents are in close proximity to two communal family bathrooms with beautiful outdoor showers. An additional 4 guests can be accommodated in two 3x3m canvas tents with stretchers in. In total the Bush Camp can accommodate 20 guests. All tents and rooms have electricity, fans, hairdryers and USB charging points.
The Bush Camp has a fully equipped Lapa for up to 20 guests with a small kitchenette, gas hob, bar fridge, ice machine and indoor & outdoor braai areas. The “Bunker House” situated in close proximity to the Lapa has a Fridge/Freezer, Microwave oven, and washing machine for guests to make use of.
The outdoor braai area has a boma area where guests can sit and relax next to a crackling bushveld fire. There is also a separate outdoor “fire-circle” for those late conversations around the fire.
The Bush Camp has a small “Bush Jacuzzi” pool for guests to cool off in on hot summer days.
The Bush Camp is booked out exclusively to one group or family at a time, ensuring privacy for the guests. We are pet friendly on request.
Three non-electrified bush campsites are also available to accommodate camping guests. Each campsite has a built-in braai, tap and large lawn area for pitching tents or parking a caravan. A communal ablution and wash up area is provided, including two outdoor bush showers. Hot water for the showers is provided by a “donkey” boiler. Wood is provided for the donkey. The campsites are spread out approximately 50m from one another to ensure that guests have their privacy.
The farm has several kilometers of private gravel road. The roads are suitable for children to cycle on or for guests to explore the farm.
